The History of The Brantford Club

The Brantford Club opened in 1898, in the gracious George Street residence that had been the home of Dr. John Young Bown and his wife, Margaret. Five men of the city founded it: a manufacturer, a banker, a publisher, a barrister, and a gentleman. What they shared was a simple idea with staying power, a place where the people building Brantford could meet, talk, and keep good company.

From those first years the Club held an unhurried, civil character. Members came for billiards and cards, for a glass of well-kept wine, and for the kind of conversation that turns acquaintances into colleagues and colleagues into friends. The rooms have been refreshed many times over the decades, but the purpose has not changed. For more than a century and a quarter, the Brantford Club has been the room where much of the city’s business and many of its friendships have quietly been made.

Today the Club still stands where it began, at 98 George Street, and still keeps that founding idea at its heart. The doors are open more widely now, to anyone in Brantford and the County of Brant who values tradition, good food, and real conversation. The membership has grown and changed, but the feeling on a quiet evening is much the same as it was in 1898.
